Love story: Google ads

How do I read a Google AdSense report?

Dave, as per your suggestion and encouragement, I have taken the plunge and signed up for Google AdSense. Now I’ve added it to my site and am getting some traffic and an occasional clickthrough. But I really don’t understand the nuances between all the data shown in the report; can you walk me through the overview report in AdSense?

When I first signed up for AdSense I also found the reports pretty hard to figure out, I admit, but talking with a lot of folk, including AdSense guru Joel Comm (who sells a slick ebook called Google AdSense Secrets that’s well worth the investment if you’re serious about reinventing your Web site for better AdSense revenue) I think I’ve started to figure things out.
To be able to write this particular answer, I checked in with my colleagues at Google (it’s helpful to have written a popular book about Google, I must say) and received permission to publish my actual AdSense reports here on the blog. So let’s start there:

This is a snapshot from a few days ago at <ahem> some point in the day (while I have permission to share my actual earnings, it doesn’t mean that I want to

image: http://cdn-4.askdavetaylor.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

:-) so it gives you a sense of my overall traffic levels, percentage of ad blocks that receive clicks, and overall earnings: at this point in the day I’d already earned just a smidgen over $100.

Let’s go down the left side first. Notice that Google splits out revenue by category, so here I have AdSense for Content (which includes this very content page that you’re reading that has an AdSense block included), AdSense for Search (which is when I host Google searches on my site and then share in the PPC revenue if anyone clicks on an ad in the search result page), and Referrals (get someone else to sign up for AdSense or download the Firefox web browser with Google’s toolbar already included and you can earn a small bonus).

I’ve talked about this before, but again notice how for me, as for most people I know in the AdSense program, my revenue comes exclusively from AdSense for Content. Referrals are a bit more subtle, I admit, because people need to both sign up and earn a certain threshold amount before I’ll get paid, so the sign-ups I get will hopefully pay out down the road.

Also, if there’s one thing that you need to be conversant in as an AdSense for Content participant, it’s channels . Channels let you differentiate between your Google ads on different areas of your site or, if you’ve more than one site like I do, between sites. The figure shown is aggregated across all sites that I have in the AdSense program, so if I burrowed in further you could see that some sites have much lower traffic but superb per-click earnings, while others have huge traffic and almost no clicks at all. But channels are a different posting, so let’s stay focused on this report.

What is Google AdSense?

dSense is a very nice, clean and effective way to monetize your websites traffic, and it’s super easy to implement. It’s one of my top earners and has been since 2009. Google earns most of their revenue by selling other website owners to the right to advertise on their search result pages in a bidding type auction that is completely automated. All this is managed by a Google product called AdWords.

Google earn billions every year with this program and you too can earn a share of this revenue. All you have to do is sign up for an Adsense account with Google then start displaying these same text ads on your own web site. For the most part, you’re partnered with Google to help advertise and accordingly they will pay you a percentage (roughly around 60%) of what those ads earn.

This is called AdSense.
Every website owner should consider this program. Even if your site is just for purely information purposes, you can still display ads and make a decent income with AdSense — maybe just enough to fund your website. When you are staring it expenses can be tough, if you are under a tight budget and the idea of paying for a site is a little much, then this could be an excellent way to recuperate your costs.

How Much Can You Earn With AdSense?
The commission you receive per click largely depends on how much advertisers are willing to pay Google for that particular ad/keyword phrase combination. When your site visitors click on one of those ads, you will earn a share of that ads revenue. Earnings vary widely with clicks ranging anywhere from 2 cents to $150 per click. Ceratin keyword phrases like travel, insurance, attorney’s and real estate may earn you more per click. Typically, these are highly competitive keywords with an insane amount of competition. Advertisers generally pay more for the most popular terms because they are searched much more frequently.

Google closely guards their advertising system, they will not reveal how much you make for each ad that is clicked on your web property. However, you can login to your account whenever you like to see the total amount of revenue you’ve generated. You can run reports for that day, week, month or year. You can also segment your earnings by URL. For example, if you want to see how one of your site did last month, you could run a custom URL filter to show earnings from a set period of time.

The amount you’ll from each click depends greatly on the amount of specific traffic you receive to your own site and how well the ads match your audience’s interests. Factors such as the placement and location of the ads on your pages, and of course the amount you will receive per click. Ideally, each site you create a site will be based on a topic you know a lot about. Or that you are very good at researching a topic and writing an effective article of information on said topic.

My Google AdSense Method
We have been receiving monthly deposits from Google since 2009, I started out with very little knowledge. I will admit I made some pretty common rookie mistakes. Along the way I learned how to write about content that people search for, how to solve computer or mobile phone problems, warnings and scam alerts. Pretty soon one of my sites was generating over 5000 visitors a month organically. I optimized it for adsense and it generates around$ 3-400 per month. Content is unique, well researched and written with search traffic in mind.

“I give people the information they are looking for”
I promote AdSense on all of my websites, at current I run 6 personal/business blogs, one job board site, and another 18 micro niche websites geared extensively for AdSense Earnings. These are all built based on the guide I am offering YOU right here for Free!

My sites have been around for a while and I have been accumulating traffic and writing content constantly. That is the secret to being successful at this game. Content. You have to be able to write effective content with Search engines in mind. Making a lot of money using AdSense is all about traffic and numbers. The more traffic you have, the greater your earning potential will be. Guaranteed.

“This is not a Get Rich Quick Scheme”
I did not always make a lot from Adsense. My first month’s earnings back in January 2009 totaled less than $50. However, as my traffic increased, so did my deposits. Ready to get started. Download my guide today.
